How to Avoid Road Rage Car Accidents
December 8, 2022

Unfortunately, we live in a time when road rage statistics continue to rise. Most people have either experienced road rage or have had road rage at some point in time while driving. However, there is a difference between having a frustrating moment while driving and having an instinct where road rage has escalated into a dangerous situation. In 2019 alone, 82% of people admitted to committing an act of road rage in the past year. Furthermore, according to SafeMotorist, a total of 12,610 injuries and 218 murders have been attributed to road rage over seven years in the United States. It would be best if you avoided road rage from other drivers whenever you can, and our Atlanta personal injury attorneys are here to provide you with tips on how to avoid road rage car accidents.

How road rage occurs – and what not to do.

It’s best to ensure that when you leave your home to operate your vehicle, you don’t feel rushed, angry, or upset because this can trigger your own negative emotions toward other drivers on the road. Here are some road rage triggers you should be aware of to avoid being a road rage driver.

  • Avoid repeatedly honking your horn – if someone is not moving, give them a few seconds and then give a quick honk.
  • Do not follow cars too closely.
  • Do not cut off other drivers.
  • Refrain from aggressively braking when cars are following behind you.
  • Avoid shouting or swearing at other drivers.
  • Never exit your vehicle to confront another driver.
  • Avoid weaving in and out of traffic.
  • Do not try to block another vehicle from changing lanes.

How to get out of a road rage situation

If you find yourself in a road rage situation, it’s essential to try and de-escalate the situation. It is crucial that you try to stay calm, do not try to confront the person, and make sure to stay in your vehicle.

  • Take note of everything that is going on around you. Notes include your location, license plate, and make and model of the driver’s vehicle.
  • Keep your doors locked, and windows rolled up.
  • Do not engage with the person.
  • Avoid eye contact.
  • Try to drive away if an accident does not occur.
  • Call 911 if you feel threatened.

What should you do if you are in a car accident from road rage?

If you happen to get in a car accident with another driver because of road rage, it’s essential to follow the same protocol if you are in a car accident. First, if you can, try to de-escalate the situation and call 911 immediately.

  • Most importantly, ensure you and your passengers are not injured â€“ everyone’s safety is most important. So do a check on everyone to make sure they are okay.
  • If you can, move your car off the road â€“ leaving your vehicle in traffic may cause more accidents. If it is safe, slowly drive your vehicle to the side of the road and out of the traffic flow.
  • After the police have come and the situation is de-escalated. Write down all details while they are still fresh in your mind â€“ write down exactly what happened to cause the accident. Also, if possible, write down a description of the other vehicle, license plate information, weather conditions, and other details.
  • Take photos â€“ you’ll want pictures of the damage to your vehicle and any debris the other damaged car may have left behind.
  • Talk to witnesses â€“ If witnesses stop to help, get their information. Ask for their name and phone number and have them write down what they saw.
  • Seek medical treatment – it’s crucial that you see a medical professional after your accident. It’s important that you make sure you are cleared of any injuries and have a report from a doctor to use in your claim.
